Our monthly message
2013 seems like a distant memory, and we're looking ahead to what 2014 has in store for us. We still can’t believe how fast the first few weeks of this year have flown by!
Firstly, we would like to thank all our members who contributed to the All Party Commission on Physical Activity in January. We hope that our collective voice can be heard, and more importantly acted upon by the Government; encouraging the need for more physical activity at primary school level, as well as across all age groups in the UK.
Last year's news in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement that the Government would be continuing to fund primary school sports gave us the reassurance we needed, and further strengthened our position in the school sports and physical activity industry. With this in mind, it's clear to us that we have the perfect opportunity to inspire those key influencers.
And following our first Members' newsletter back in November 2013, we're pleased to welcome five new members to the Compass Association family! Ignite Sport joins us as Founding Partners, whilst SW Athletics Academy, Participation People, Rugger Eds Development Ltd. and United Learning have all come on board as General Members. If you're not currently a Compass member, don't miss out. Take a look at the benefits you could take advantage of.
Here at Compass HQ, we decided to have a little Twitter refresh, so take a look at @COMPASS_CEO and @COMPASS_UK and make sure you follow us.
As ever, we love to get feedback, so let us know what you think of our newsletter. Just drop us a line at [email protected].
The Compass Team.
In the News
|
Last week the updated DfE ‘Behaviour and Discipline in Schools’ policy was released, and highlighted a point that bad behaviour should be met with extra physical activity, namely running. This policy was closely followed by news that Prime Minister David Cameron had pledged an additional £150m per annum until 2020 for primary school sport in England.
|
Read Compass's press releases on our response to the DfE policy and the additional funding. Following our statements, we have seen interest from Sky Sports Radio, BBC Radio 4 Today Programme and the Evening Standard.
Designed to Move
|
It might not be breaking news, but physical activity in the UK has fallen in recent years and our lack of moving appears to be the main culprit - lift vs the stairs anyone? The All-Party Commission on Physical Activity group have been established to address physical inactivity in the UK, and make direct, policy-based recommendations to tackle this growing crisis.
|
With evidence and examples from our members, Compass submitted our document to the Commission to give further strength to our campaign for better school sports provision. The Commission will release their findings and recommendations in Spring 2014.

Compass to question Parents and Teachers
|
We'll be working with an independent research company to produce a survey that will provide evidence that demonstrates the need for external sports providers in schools, and the quality of the provision currently provided.
|
Targeting teachers, parents and also children, we hope to establish the volume of schools using external providers, the quality experienced by the schools, what parents and children want from their PE lessons, and who they are taught by. All these findings will be published once the survey is complete. Look out for more updates coming soon.
