Sally Gunnell OBE Launches New Health & Wellbeing Programme

Children across the UK are missing out on the best possible start in life because their parents don’t have the time, money or knowledge to help them lead a healthier lifestyle, a survey suggests*.

Two thirds of parents polled by leading children’s coaching company Premier Sport say they don’t know enough to educate their children about healthy living, while 37% blame lack of time and 30% cite the cost of healthy food and gym facilities as a barrier.

The survey also found that despite just 16% of children leading the healthiest lifestyle in their household, less than half of parents will be encouraging their children to get fitter over the next 12 months.

Olympic gold medallist, Premier Sport supporter and mother-of-three, Sally Gunnell OBE, is shocked by the figures and says families need more support to get active if future generations are to stay fit and healthy.

“The great thing about Premier Transition is that it removes some of the key barriers we know parents struggle with when it comes to family fitness,” Ms Gunnell said, adding: “Not only do the classes provide parents with low-cost access to fitness facilities at a time when they would to be heading to school anyway, they also give them tips and advice on nutrition so they can help their families get fitter and healthier too.”

Improving pupils health and wellbeing – know your WHY?

There are 3 burning questions surrounding health and wellbeing in schools...

  1. Why is health and wellbeing important?
  2. How are you supporting the health and wellbeing of children in your care as part of your vision, ethos and strategic direction of your school and provide indicators to support this.
  3. What could you be doing to improve?

Yvonne Gandy visits schools and academies across the country, leaders of these schools always discuss what they are doing, but find it difficult to explain, particularly where additional funding has been provided, why they are doing what they are doing. Find out more on why, how and what your school should be doing and start the process of improvement.

Olympic inspiration for all...

Following the amazing Rio Olympics, Premier Sport has teamed up with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to provide inspirational athlete visits to over 10,000 UK school children.

The Trust’s athletes include Olympians, Paralympians and top athletes, all of which have experienced the highs and lows of world-class competition. There’s an inspirational story in every athlete and they know what it’s like to overcome adversity and still have the will to succeed.

“I’m pleased Premier Sport will be supporting us to make even more of an impact across the country’s schools in the future. It’s great to work with partners who share that vision in supporting young people and making lasting change.”

Double Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes

Inspire the next generation...

The athletes will share their journeys in sport and allow children the opportunity to reflect on their own aspirations. The athlete visits will help motivate children to simply take part or strive for their personal best. This world class attitude can be applied into both sport and other areas in school and their personal lives, ensuring every inspirational athlete visit will live long in the memory, many years after Rio...

An ambassador visit includes a personalised video from the athlete to the children, an inspirational ‘Olympic values’ school assembly, Q&A session with the athlete so children will get their chance to fire questions in a press conference format. An ambassador visit also includes an interactive training session delivered by the athlete, classroom visits and an Olympic style awards ceremony.
