Manor Park’s staff and pupils profit from sport premium funding with Premier Sport

Pupils from Manor Park Primary School, Aston in Birmingham have teamed with Premier Sport as part of the Government's sport premium funding initiative. The school is working in collaboration with Premier Sport this school year to improve the quality of its Physical Education curriculum.

Coach Nathaniel Gordon from Premier Sport works with classes from across the school. Coach Gordon leads the first lesson with school staff supporting the delivery. School Staff then lead the second lesson, where they concentrate on reinforcing and extending skills and the children's knowledge and enjoyment of Physical Education.

Head Teacher, Ruth Whittaker commented:

"I am delighted that we selected Premier Sport to support the staff in their Professional Development as there has been good progress made by both staff and children in the skills for Physical Education and Sport."

Val Hylton, P.E. Facilitator at Manor Park said:

"I believe that Premier Sport is providing Manor Park with the invaluable tools to plan and deliver high quality P.E. Learning alongside the coach is a fantastic way for staff to develop and improve their own and the children's P.E skills. Children are now demonstrating better subject vocabulary, remembering and using key teaching points to develop their own P.E skills across basketball, hockey, fencing and gymnastics."

Through working alongside specialist and qualified coaches teachers report they have benefitted through increasing their subject knowledge and confidence in teaching Physical Education, both of which contribute to better outcomes for the children through high quality teaching and learning opportunities. The School have also found that the children's enjoyment of the subject has increased and children can't wait to participate in lessons. The children have already participated in a wide range of sports including Basketball, Uni-Hoc, Gymnastics and Fencing. The School has also extended its lunchtime provision enabling Lunch Time Supervisors to provide more personalised learning opportunities across the school during this time so that children can be more physically active.

Other members of staff said:

"I feel Coach Gordon is brilliant! He has really helped improve our teaching and learning in P.E. The planning is progressive and easy to understand and I can see how children can progress in their learning. Coach Gordon makes lessons enjoyable, both for staff and children. I look forward to working with him in the future."

A pupil commented:

I like going to fencing club because I have never done fencing before. I was so excited when we got to wear the protective clothing. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I do! Coach Gordon shows us lots of the different moves I would recommend doing fencing.

Premier Sport's primary objective is to ensure the Sports Premium Funding is sustainable for schools over and beyond the three years of funding.
