DfE release further guidance on primary school PE and sport funding

Back in March the government announced they will be providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015, to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools.

This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary school head teachers to invest into provision which suits individual school needs.

Since then we have been circulating facts, sharing good practice and advising on successful strategies and partnerships which other schools across the UK are developing. Knowledge of your peers investments may assist in your creation of sustainable, measurable outcomes for your pupils.

Purpose of funding

The Department for Education last week provided more information on the sport funding. In this statement the government urges schools to use the funding to:

  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE.
  • supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs.
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport.
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport.
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games.
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport.
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs.
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools.

Who we are

It's also worth noting, because of our extensive network, we adhere to Sports Coach UK's Minimum Standards of Deployment and have developed industry leading Minimum Operating Standards (MOS) which expand on these. Head teachers can be confident that all Premier Sport staff working in schools have the correct, relevant certification as well as being qualified and appropriately trained and assessed to ensure ongoing development of both the deliverer and the child is apparent.

"It is easy to measure the impact that Premier Sport has made on our school. Not only have we won many regional events which had previously eluded us, the children and parents have overwhelmingly articulated their support for Mr Blenford since he began delivering sport in our school; he has bought out the best in the children he works with, his exceptional work has been recognised by all stakeholders..."

Head teacher, Grendon Underwood Combined School, Buckinghamshire
