PE teaching needs radical shake-up says Parliamentary group

Written by Yvonne Gandy, Education Strategic Lead, Premier Education Group

The status of PE in schools needs a ‘radical shake up, and should be valued in the same way as core academic subjects’ says a recent All Party Parliamentary Group in a report on a fit and healthy childhood. The group recommends a personalised PE programme for each individual child and states 21st century PE should reflect different opportunities for the many ways children express themselves physically and should move away from ‘skill, drill lessons’.

The report says the way forward is to give children greater opportunities to explore the type of physical activity that best suits them. It says the way to do this is by increasing the number of specialist PE teachers in primary schools.

The ‘whole school approach’ - Fun-Trition and Fit-Trition programmes...

A part of Premier Transition, Fun-Trition is a cross-curriculum based programme for school children from KS1 through to KS2 that will not only teach food education, but help increase your school meal uptake, and engage parents in the health and wellbeing of their children.

Schools have now introduced Free School Meals, a School Food Plan, healthier developments to cookery/nutrition in the D&T curriculum and Ofsted inspectors are now monitoring and evaluating the ‘whole school approach’ to healthy eating. As a result of this the demand and expectation for schools to deliver on health and well-being is becoming of much greater importance.

It’s not just children that we help here at Premier Transition; our Fit-Trition programme is aimed directly at parents and teachers. By working in collaboration with local schools, Fit-Trition offers busy parents everything they need – from fitness classes to attend after dropping off their children at school, to nutritional advice and motivational facts while also offering fitness sessions within the community.

Fit-Trition not only helps parents, but also helps teachers; due to the nature of the exercise sessions and the location, it provides the perfect opportunity for staff in schools to have their own group training sessions – not only does this improve their health and wellbeing, but it also sets a good example to the pupils and shows it is a healthy place to be.

Olympic inspiration for all...

Following the amazing Rio Olympics, Premier Sport has teamed up with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to provide inspirational athlete visits to over 10,000 UK school children.

The Trust’s athletes include Olympians, Paralympians and top athletes, all of which have experienced the highs and lows of world-class competition. There’s an inspirational story in every athlete and they know what it’s like to overcome adversity and still have the will to succeed.

“I’m pleased Premier Sport will be supporting us to make even more of an impact across the country’s schools in the future. It’s great to work with partners who share that vision in supporting young people and making lasting change.”

Double Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes

Inspire the next generation...

The athletes will share their journeys in sport and allow children the opportunity to reflect on their own aspirations. The athlete visits will help motivate children to simply take part or strive for their personal best. This world class attitude can be applied into both sport and other areas in school and their personal lives, ensuring every inspirational athlete visit will live long in the memory, many years after Rio...

An ambassador visit includes a personalised video from the athlete to the children, an inspirational ‘Olympic values’ school assembly, Q&A session with the athlete so children will get their chance to fire questions in a press conference format. An ambassador visit also includes an interactive training session delivered by the athlete, classroom visits and an Olympic style awards ceremony.
